Planning for Integration

Planning Up Front

I do more planning for units ahead of time. I select an overall question to focus on for the duration of the unit. I evaluate what skills and strategies students need for next step learning. Up Front planning provides me more time later on when I am monitoring and adjusting for those daily lessons.

When planning I think about these questions?

  1. What content/concepts do my students need to know?
  2. What skills and strategies do they need to learn?
  3. Which activities or lessons would be good on computer?
  4. What background, concept building needs to be done?
  5. What is would be a good final project?
  6. Which activities or lessons will be online (on computer) or off line (at seats individually or in small groups)

Planning Think Abouts
These are some suggestions I have for you to get going on thinking about planning with technology in mind.

When planning for Writing

Think about the writing process  - Plan, draft, edit, revise, and publish
This is an easy place to start.  If you teach writing, then use the technology to help students plan, draft, edit, revise and publish stories.  Stretch out a little bit and write letters to keypals you have met through email.

When planning for Math

Think about ways to gather and analyze meaningful data
An easy way to get started is to use your graphing programs to collect data and then graph the results.  Participating in a Global Project gives students a chance to gather real life data to compare results.

When planning for Reading

Think about ways to read to find information,  to support and connect ideas
Use lessons that involve informational resources from the Internet and other electronic resources.  Plan lessons that have learners searching for information in order to answer a question or solve a problem.  Using information resources also helps students to build background and extend concepts.

When planning for
Science and Social Studies

    Enhance skills and concepts
These areas lend themselves to technology projects that extend technology into the Internet.  Using the Internet to provide information and access to data helps students to make connections to the world outside of the classroom.

Advice:

Start small one area at a time

Start with a unit or activity you already do and do it on computer

Select activities or lesson that support concept development and skills needed for the unit project
