Daily Routine

In an integrated project based classroom the daily routine changes depending on types of projects being conducted. I find I don’t teach as many long lesson and teach “mini” lessons.  Much of the teaching happens in small groups and with individuals. Which really supports individualized plans for students.

There are many different activities that happen at the same time in my classroom. Combining science and social studies content into reading and writing activities helps to build an integrated day.

Literacy Block
During this time students rotate on to computers for reading activities. Usually related to what we are studying in science and social studies.  The time at computers is used to research, problem solve, build background knowledge, develop content skills, or strategies, or writing assignments.

Writing:
Every month we produce a writing piece.  Every other month we use computers for the entire writing process. Majority of writing is related to science and social studies content, and required writing standards.

Math Time:
15 minute whole class lesson
3 block computer rotation, usually individual while the students work quietly at their seats.
Computer Math Rotations include working on math facts, problem solving, graphing activities, or activities related to the concepts we are learning in math class.

Science/Social Studies/Read To:
I use the half hour block to do experiments, health lessons, behavior lessons etc. I also use this as Read Aloud time although most of read aloud I have as part of my Literacy Block time in reading group or in the mini lessons.  I have had to let go of the read to everyone at the same time to utilize the computer time. Sometimes we use computers during this time and sometimes we don’t.

PRT/Communications/Reflection Time
This is time at the end of the day where students work at seats on the own personal reading. Students set monthly goals to read so many books.
There is a 3 rotation block during this time for...

Communication Time
We have ongoing projects with our ePals we use time in the afternoon to send email and data back and forth.

Reflection Time
Students work on updating their eFolios, writing in their reading response journals, or updating their booklogs, or taking AR tests.

PE Music Library Specialist Time Hint
Make every effort to have your specialist times right before a recess or right after one.  This allows for uninterrupted longer blocks of time.

My Goal is to have the technology being used 80% of the time we are in the classroom.
